Transitional accommodation for young people

Transitional supported accommodation can be provided for a period of up to 12 months for homeless young people who require a low to moderate level of support as they become ready to move into independent accommodation.

The services support homeless young people who may have resolved any immediate crises, but who may need some ongoing support to stabilise and achieve independent living. This service is designed for young people over 16 years of age. Some of these young people may still be in senior school or in continuing education. However, this service is not intended to become student accommodation for the duration of their studies.

Referrals are received from a variety of places including Commonwealth Reconnect services or Youth Support Coordinator services, schools, shelters and other agencies.

The Department of Housing provide properties for these initiatives under the Crisis Accommodation Program

The transitional accommodation services for young people are funded through the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program.
