Suicide prevention initiatives
The Department of Communities is one of 11 Queensland Government agencies responsible for implementing initiatives under the Queensland Government Suicide Prevention Strategy 2003-2008. The strategy aimed to reduce rates of suicide and suicide attempts in the Queensland population, particularly among known priority groups such as Indigenous people, young people, older people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people in custody, people with a mental illness and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Initiatives cover a broad spectrum of interventions, from projects with a focus on prevention and early intervention to those focused on bereavement following suicide.
Suicide prevention support materials – to assist organisations and service providers to identify and respond to people at risk of suicide.
Funding – to non-government organisations for delivery of support services and programs such as Brisbane Based Youth Suicide Prevention Program, Cape York Youth Initiative, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Youth Project, Young Refugee Project, Lockhart River Suicide Prevention Project, The Rural and Remote and Indigenous Communities Suicide Prevention Project and Older Men in Rural and Remote Areas Suicide Prevention program.
Queensland Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Conference 2006 – provided delegates with current information and knowledge to effectively work towards the prevention of suicide and self-harm.
