Annual Report 2006-07
This was a year of growth and opportunity for our department. We now have a stronger capacity to deliver the services our clients need through all stages of life, as a result of the transfer of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy responsibilities and specific functions from Queensland Health to our department.
Highlights for 2006-07 included: the introduction of the Redress Scheme in May 2007 which provides ex gratia payments to people who experienced abuse and neglect as children in Queensland institutions; the launch of Roma House in Spring Hill in November 2006 which provides crisis accommodation for homeless Queenslanders; and The Our Place, Our Future and Rural Service Access initiatives which are helping to build more prosperous, sustainable and liveable communities in rural and regional Queensland.
