Autism services boost confidence

Thomas and Jaccob are four year olds with a lot in common. They live in regional Queensland, they love riding bikes, and they are both well on their way to a positive future with help from the Autism Early Intervention Initiative.

When Jaccob from Rockhampton was first diagnosed with autism, his parents were determined to give him the best chance at an education. Within two weeks he was receiving services from Autism Queensland. Jaccob's mother Trish says that since becoming involved with the service, Jaccob has started doing things without being prompted. "When he says new words it's like Christmas," Trish says.

The journey for Thomas took a little longer. His family moved from Townsville to Brisbane so that Thomas could visit an AEIOU service centre. Now that a new centre has been opened in Townsville, Thomas and his family have been able to return home and couldn't be happier.

Jeremy, Thomas' father says his son's communication skills have really improved. "He is more confident in socialising and therefore more able to learn."

Disability Services Queensland funds Autism Queensland and AEIOU centres to deliver these vital services. The early intervention centres offer children with autism a 25-hour a week tailored support program which can be extended for working families.
