A kiss and practical information make it better
Preventing Serious Injuries to Children is the latest in the Department of Communities' series of 20 parenting tip sheets that offer helpful suggestions on tackling some of the challenges faced by parents, carers and families.
As the majority of injuries to children happen in and around the home parents need to be aware of what they can do to create a safe environment. The Queensland Health's Injury Surveillance Unit reported that of the 58 000 children under five years of age who presented at emergency departments in Queensland between 1998 and 2006, less than 4 per cent had been injured within a child care setting and 80 per cent of injuries had occurred at home.
Simple strategies such as having rules for safe play and making sure children are wearing appropriate footwear can help to reinforce your children's understanding of personal safety.
The new tip sheets about how to prevent serious injuries to children will assist parents and child care services to develop a greater understanding of the strategies necessary to promote safe environments and safety practices in the home and licensed child care services throughout Queensland.
Other new tip sheets include Getting support - it's ok to ask for help, Returning to work and Why play is important.
