Technology meets tradition
The Hope Vale community has a new meeting place where the latest technology and traditional library services merge to create a space that can capture and preserve local history and traditions.
The new Indigenous Knowledge Centre and Community Technology Centre is the result of a two year project between traditional owners, businesses and government agencies. Community partners include philanthropist Bob Magid from DOT.COM.MOB and representatives from the local council, State Library of Queensland and the Department of Communities who were on hand at the Jack Bambie Memorial Building to celebrate the official opening.
The State Library supports 16 regional Indigenous Knowledge Centres around the state with set-up materials such as books, magazines, audiovisual materials, computers and staff training and fun literacy and recreational programs.
The centre encourages community access by combining a meeting place for traditional business with modern library services. Cooktown high school students are already attending a supervised homework club after school at the centre.
