Active people
Catching a bus may seem mundane to some people, but a recent trip on a bus was the ride of a lifetime for Michael. Using public transport, preparing a meal or doing the gardening can be a challenge for some people with an intellectual disability but it can be easier with the right support.
Active Support is an innovative approach that creates more opportunities for people with a disability to take an active part in everyday life. Organising the equipment for the gardening, holding the peg basket to help with the laundry, or assisting with the cooking are a few of the everyday skills that can make a difference for people with a disability.
Michael is supported by Disability Services Queensland’s Pine Rivers Accommodation Support Service where he and others are encouraged to do for themselves rather than have tasks done for them.
It’s about being a part of everyday life.
