Josh values money and lifestyle skills
"Money is good," says Mackay's Josh Clarke with a wry smile. Thanks to a Department of Communities training program, Josh knows just how good it can be.
Now, when Josh gets his fortnightly disability pension cheque he can budget how to spend it and he knows how to check his change.
Josh, who is 21, has autism and the life skills program has helped him to recognise the value of things, to count his money, and how to use an EFTPOS card.
"Until Josh did the personalised training he was not confident handling money — there was a risk he could be ripped off," says his mother Di Clarke.
"The program was conveniently held at our home. It has improved Josh's self confidence and I can relax now when he goes out on his own to social events, or when he goes shopping," she says.
During the two month program Josh set another self-development goal to cook with confidence — which he now does.
"I have become more independent and I loved meeting with the workers to do the training each week," Josh says.
Since undertaking the program Josh participates in two disability networking groups, Lifestyle Choices, which organises evening ten pin bowling outings, and Galaxy social activities during the day.
Mackay Whitsunday regional executive director Terry O'Connor says the lifestyle training program is adapted to each client's requirements.
"The program caters for each individual and their needs. It is mostly a one-on-one program but there are options if people want to do it in a group."
