Obesity summit update
Almost one in four children and half of the adults in Australia are overweight or obese.
This is a serious issue, and it's why the Queensland Premier held an Obesity Summit in May 2006.
The summit gathered ideas from experts and the community to help Queenslanders fight obesity.
This resulted in the Premier announcing $21 million in funding for initiatives over three years including:
- an Eat Well Be Active social marketing campaign (household information pack, advertising campaign and website) and partnering with the Australian Breastfeeding Association to promote breastfeeding
- increased obesity education in schools by strengthening the Australian Medical Association Queensland's Kids GP Campaign
- grants programs such as the Community Partnerships Grants Program and the Young Athlete Assistance Program
- initiatives to create healthier environments where we live, work and play through opening up school sport and recreation facilities for community use, better food choices in Queensland Health facilities, business partnerships encouraging workplace health programs, healthy lifestyle programs for the public sector workforce, and a cycle transit centre in partnership with the Brisbane City Council.
These activities build on current government activities such as the Go for 2&5 ® fruit and vegetable campaign; Smart Choices – Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland schools, Get Active Queensland Children and Young People Strategy, and TravelSmart.
