Maria Tanos

Location:
Stafford Heights

You could describe Maria Tanos’ contribution to the Australian and Greek community of Brisbane’s south east as ‘simply delicious’. Maria has spent many years preparing and serving morning teas, meals and sweets for fundraising events as well as for those in need.

But Maria is well known and admired volunteer for more than just for her cooking skills. For many years she has served in honorary positions in various philanthropic organisations.

Her longest standing voluntary contribution is to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of St George, which she joined as a founding member in 1959. Maria has been an executive committee member of the society for the past 14 years. She is convenor of the roster of the regular coffee mornings, and involved in cooking for the various fundraising lunches the organisations holds. She is also convenor for the cooking of the baklava and spinach pies served at the annual Paniyiri Greek festival.

She is also an executive committee member of the Greek Welfare Trust of the Community of St George, the organisation that raises funds for the Greek Orthodox Community Welfare Centre. Again, Maria is involved in preparing morning tea for parishioners, cooking meals and sweets for the Christmas meal each year and assisting with aged care respite activities.

Maria has also volunteered for the Cypriot Community of Queensland, including two years as vice president, the Hellenic RSL Women’s Committee, St Nicholas Hostel for the Aged, and at World Expo ’88.

Through her excellent cooking abilities, Maria has made a practical contribution to the fundraising efforts of all the organisations which she supports. This hard-working, warm and caring person, who is always willing to help out, is admired by all those she comes into contact with.
