When a young Nellie Boyle volunteered to sew duffle bags and other supplies for the Australian Defence Services, little did she know it would be the start of a lifetime of volunteering for a wide range of community organisations.
Since this time there have been few organisations in the Kedron and Chermside area that have not benefitted from Nellie’s generous contribution of her time and skills.
From convening fetes, street stalls and tuckshops to providing respite care for children with a disability, Nellie has done it all for organisations as diverse as the Girl Guides, the Queensland Country Women’s Association, the Australian Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the Windsor Croquet Club.
Nellie has never sought reward or recognition for her efforts, preferring instead to work behind the scenes for any organisation that needs her for as long as she is needed.
This commitment led to her receiving long-term service awards for more than 20 years of volunteering to the Queensland Country Women’s Association, the Australian Red Cross and her local Meals on Wheels group.
But it is Nellie’s passion for croquet that sees her still volunteering as a coach two days a week at the Windsor Croquet Club. Over the years she has taken on the role of the club’s voluntary kitchen hand, kitchen coordinator, and junior and senior vice-president, and she is now the club’s patron.
And at an age when others are taking it easy, Nellie is still helping others. Not content to sit still she has introduced recreational ‘game time’ at Delamore Retirement Community where she lives.
A person who has always enjoyed keeping active in mind, body and spirit, she is now inspiring her peers to do the same.
