Bill Benson MBE
Location: Birkdale
Bill Benson's philosophy on volunteering is simple - 'we take things out of the community everyday, and we should be prepared to give back'. This has motivated Bill throughout his life, from his 30-year military service, to taking up full-time community service following his 'retirement'.
During his military career, in which he rose to Major, Bill served in Korea, Japan, Malaya, Singapore, Borneo and Malaysia. His achievements were rewarded with a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in 1980.
It was during his time in the military that Bill became interested in addressing youth problems, which led to working with the guide and scout movements, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and youth welfare centres.
Today, Bill is a highly valued and respected member of a number of committees, including the Redlands Chamber of Commerce; Council of the Ageing; Older People Speak Out (OPSO); The Seniors Task Force on Crime; and the Redlands Shire Council Seniors Advisory Committee.
Bill is called on to present lectures, participate in reference groups and be an advisor to local and federal members of parliament.
One of Bill's key volunteering activities for the past 12 years is as zone chairman for National Seniors Australia. During this time, Bill has established himself as a key advocacy figure, highlighting seniors' issues to government and relevant organisations. Bill's commitment to this role has seen the expansion of National Seniors Australia within his zone.
Arguably one of Queensland's busiest seniors, Bill's wealth of experience and wisdom is ensuring he continues to 'give back' to the community.
