Cynthia Haigh
Location: Forsayth
If the town of Forsayth was a person, its heart would be Cynthia Haigh. Forsayth, a tiny town in Far North Queensland, has a population of 90 people and an enormous spirit. The members of this vibrant community enjoy a range of activities and events organised by local committees. For most of her life, Cynthia has been an integral member of the groups that make these activities a reality.
Cynthia was born and grew up in Forsayth and, from her early teens, volunteered her services in catering for local events. Later, Cynthia offered her organisation and administration skills to support the local community. Her efforts as the town's representative on the Etheridge Shire Council Regional Arts Development Fund, for example, resulted in Forsayth securing substantial funding over a number of years for local arts projects.
Cynthia's contribution to Forsayth is well recognised by her town. She is an executive member of the local Queensland Country Women's Association, an inaugural executive member of the Forsayth Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Forsayth Centenary Committee.
As part of her role with the Forsayth Hospital, Cynthia has taken the helm of the Hole in the Fence Café for six years. The café provides morning tea and lunch - and the chance to chat - for people who have travelled to the hospital for a doctor's appointment.
Cynthia's fundraising efforts have supplied the hospital with some clinical equipment and, more recently, helped the victims of the 2009 floods in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Such is Cynthia's pride in her beloved Forsayth that she even helps maintain the gardens and premises of the community library and Forsayth Church. These tasks she undertakes simply for the enjoyment of others who use the premises.
