Zilla McAuliffe

Location: Aramac

More than 50 years ago, Zilla McAuliffe joined the Muttaburra Country Women's Association straight from school, and she has worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the district ever since. Zilla is credited with having purchased the first fax machine in her district of Aramac in Central West Queensland, which she bought to keep up with her volunteering work.

Zilla is involved in numerous committees working across areas including aged care, education, emergency services, health, social welfare and sport. She was instrumental in publishing the local telephone directory, proceeds of which go to the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association of Australia.

Zilla also turned her creativity to designing the White Bulls. These stuffed toy bulls represent the infamous theft of 1000 head of cattle from a property near Aramac in the 19th century by bushranger Captain Starlight. Sales from Zilla’s White Bulls go to the hospital auxiliary, of which Zilla is president.

Never one to shy from a challenge, Zilla travels considerable distances to attend meetings and lobby dignitaries on behalf of the district. Her work will continue to make a difference in the district, with her sights set on ensuring a high standard of healthcare services for older people and people with a disability.
