2006 Seniors Week events and photo gallery
The week was an opportunity for older people, their families and friends to celebrate the active and diverse lifestyles of Queensland seniors.
The Seniors Week theme, “Ageing – everybody’s doing it!”, encouraged people of all ages and backgrounds to take a positive attitude to ageing and older people.
The Department of Communities worked with community groups to create opportunities for Queenslanders to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions seniors make to our community.
Seniors Week launch
Seniors Week 2006 celebrations started in Cairns on Friday, 18 August with a free concert for seniors, family and friends to officially launch the week in Queensland.
The launch included the Aussie All Stars Show, featuring a great line-up of Australian talent including Wilbur Wilde, Wendy Stapleton, Lisa Edwards and the Mike Brady Band performing classics by Elvis, Dusty Springfield, Johnny O’Keefe and more.

Lisa Edwards Sunday Fun Day at South Bank
Rhonda BurchmoreSeniors Week 2006 came alive on Sunday, 20 August at the Sunday Fun Day at South Bank in Brisbane. Seniors, family and friends enjoyed free food and entertainment, and lots of activities in and around the Suncorp Piazza.
Everything on the program was free, including:
- a 5 kilometre fun walk
- breakfast and lunch
- interactive lessons in tai chi, screen printing, African drumming or rock’n’roll dancing and organic cooking demonstration
- fabulous entertainment
Seniors Card Expo and Spectacular
Over thirty Queensland businesses showcased a huge range of products and services at the Seniors Card Expo & Spectacular, all offering special discount prices under the Queensland Government’s Seniors Card business discount and concessions scheme.
Special offers, great prizes and free entertainment were on offer for two fun packed days at Brisbane’s South Bank parklands Thursday 24 and Friday 25, August.
Choir voices – Singing Our Diversity
The Queensland Seniors Council's representative's Mr Choe Lam Tan and Mr Kevin Bond hosted Choir Voices - Singing Our Community at Brisbane’s South Bank parklands on Sunday, 27 August. Multi-cultural and socially diverse community choirs came together to sing traditional language songs. Over 200 voices joined for a finale that celebrated appreciation for universal diversity.
Boom Baby Boom
In partnership with the Bundaberg Art Centre and Queensland Museum, the Department of Communities staged the Boom Baby Boom Celebrity Trivia Quiz on Tuesday, 22 August.
An enthusiastic crowd of baby boomers re-lived the 60’s and 70’s as the quiz show explored the people, music and events that shaped a generation.
The quiz was hosted by music identity, Mike Meade, and featured celebrity baby boomer panel members Normie Rowe, Carol Lloyd, Billy J Smith and Laurel Edwards. Exhibition researcher, Professor Karl Neuenfeldt also addressed the audience.
