Silent Witness Exhibition

The Sunshine Coast can expect to see a travelling exhibition of a different kind during the month of May. The Silent Witness exhibit, initially launched in the United States is an innovative initiative that brings gender violence out of the private realm and into public spaces - a powerful reminder that domestic violence concerns all of us. An Australian first, the Silent Witness travelling exhibition will comprise of life-size silhouettes, each one representing and sharing a story of the impacts of domestic and family violence. Because of the lives lost due to domestic and family violence, many of these women no longer have a voice - hence the silhouettes are called the Silent Witnesses.

The Silent Witnesses will be exhibited on the streets and shopping centres, at the university and local libraries in order to remind us of their stories and call for the healing to continue until there is zero tolerance to domestic violence in our families. The very impact of the Silent Witness campaign is the fact that that each of the figures bear a significant tale and take up physical space - in effect the goal is to make the invisible visible; to go forward- touched, changed, and Silent No More! The Silent Witnesses will be on display throughout the month of May in many of the Coast's key community hubs. For more information on when and where they will be in your local area, please contact SCOPE domestic and family violence service, the peak regionalised body for the Sunshine and Cooloola Coast: (07) 5430 9300, www.scopedv.org.

Peace Begins in Our Families

On the Sunshine Coast a community event will be held on Remembrance Day, 6th May 2009 when we remember those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. The community event 'Peace begins in our Families', will bring together local artists, performers and key note speakers to celebrate and promote peace in our homes and families. With the venue being Mooloolaba's iconic 'The Loo with the View', it will be a fitting reminder of the peace and safety that many Australian families crave - with one in three Australian women experiencing domestic violence within their lifetime. The event is scheduled to begin at 5.30pm with performances including New World Rhythm Choir, a key-note speech by local magistrate Di Fingleton, drumming and singing; all culminating to a walk down to the waters edge on the beach with dozens of shoes, illuminated with candles representing lives lost to domestic and family violence. Please join us to celebrate peace within our families and remember those lives affected by domestic and family violence.
