Structure

The International Award Authority licenses national award authorities worldwide to administer The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, upholding the policies and principles of the Award.

In Australia, the National Award Authority licenses each state award authority to administer The Duke of Edinburgh's Award within their state. The Department of Communities currently holds the license to administer the Award in Queensland. The Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Penelope Wensley AO is the patron for the Award in Queensland.

The State Award Committee, whose members are appointed by the Minister responsible for The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Queensland, provides advice to the State Award Authority on policy and procedures. The current chair of this committee is Tim Quinn.

Area award committees are formed from members of the Award community and come together on a regular basis within their region to undertake a variety of roles. Some of these roles include approving Awards, organising Award presentations, delivering Adventurous Journey training and organising Adventurous Journeys, providing information about the Award and the promotion of the Award in their area.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Australia, Queensland Division, operating through the Department of Communities, licenses organisations to deliver the Award to young people throughout Queensland. These organisations appoint award coordinators to administer the program within their organisation and to provide guidance to young people participating in the program.

Registered expedition instructors are volunteers from the Award community who have undertaken training and then, through an application process, been approved by The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Queensland Division, to deliver and assess the preliminary training and practice expeditions within the adventurous journey section of the Award.
