Sunnybank State High School

On 28 July 2008 the Federal Member for Moreton, Mr Graham Perrett MP, presented nine students of Sunnybank State High School with their Bridge Awards during a special ceremony in the school hall.

The nine students from the Special Education Unit completed Level 1 of the Bridge Award and are currently working towards their Level 2 Award which they hope to complete by the end of the year.

The Level 1 Award required them to complete four components: Community Service, Skills or Hobby, Physical Activity and an Adventurous Journey. Their teachers, Mr Bergel, Ms Kehoe and Ms Hall, helped the students to complete their Awards.

Some of the students assisted in the delivery of meals with the local branch of Meals on Wheels as part of the community service component. Others visited various community service providers to gain a better understanding of how they meet the needs of community members.

All of the students learnt skills in the area of mapping and navigation. The students utilised these skills to plan and undertake various trips travelling on public transport around Brisbane.

This year is the year of physical activity, which complements the third requirement of participating in a form of physical activity. The students participated in the 10 000 steps program by using pedometers to record the number of steps they took during their outings.

The final component involved the planning and participation in an Adventurous Journey. Students chose to visit the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and Botanical Gardens at Mt Coot-tha.
