Youth Support Coordinators (YSCs)
This initiative is a joint collaboration between Department of Communities, Department of Education, Training and the Arts, and is an integral component of the Queensland Government’s Education and Training Reforms for the Future.
Youth Support Coordinators assist young people still connected to education and/or training to move into and through the senior phase of learning. Their role within schools, Technical and Further Education Institutes (TAFEs), and communities can include:
- Individual casework
- Group work
- Community projects including community education and community development activities.
The mix of services provided by the Coordinators depends on the requirements of each local community. This work may be guided by the District Youth Achievement Plans or negotiated between a Youth Support Coordinator organisation and their local education and training providers.
Community-based organisations employ 113 YSCs across Queensland to work in or with schools and TAFEs.
YSC evaluation
A three phase evaluation of the YSC initiative commenced early 2007.
Phase 1, led by the Department of Communities’ Office for Youth investigated stakeholder satisfaction with initial outcomes and reported on potential improvements. A copy of the final report on Phase 1 of the evaluation is available on this website.
The next phase of the evaluation is led by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts. The DETA evaluation builds on the information gleaned in phase one evaluation. The outcomes of the evaluation will inform the continuation of the program, provide information on the implementation of the initiative to date, and identify what works well (best practice).
The outcomes of the Evaluation will inform government decisions about the future of the YSCI Â beyond the present funding cycle ending 30 June 2009.
