2009 Funded Events
Twenty-two organisations were selected to receive funding to deliver Youth Week activities across Queensland during National Youth Week 2009 (28 March - 5 April 2009).
Moreton
Scenic Rim Regional Council was allocated $4034 to deliver two youth entertainment workshops in Boonah and Beaudesert.
Youth and Family Service Logan Inc was allocated $2750 to engage young people in the organisation and implementation of a Youth Week Festival in Logan.
North Queensland
Burdekin Shire Council was allocated $2000 to stage the Burdekin Band Fest, a battle of the bands competition for 12-25 year olds.
Carpentaria Shire Council was allocated $1320 to engage local youth from Normanton to create an Indigenous Youth Garden.
Cloncurry Shire Council was allocated $2300 to deliver a variety of events that engage young people from Cloncurry in planning, developing and implementing activities. Events included music workshops, open mike night, performances for the community, driving workshops and youth forums.
Mount Isa Youth Shelter Inc was allocated $500 to deliver a youth week activity in Mount Isa for young people from various communities within the region.
Mackay and Whitsunday
Mackay Regional Council was allocated $1926 to give young people from Mackay, Sarina and Mirani communities the opportunity to express their ideas and views through an artistic exhibition and performance workshop.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Services was been allocated $1840 to host sporting and cultural activities for Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Australian South Sea Islander young people from the Mackay, Hinterland and Whitsunday Region.
Moranbah and District Support Services Association Inc was allocated $2150 to involve young people in planning a week of activities including an art competition, dinner theatre, musician play off, and debate night.
Far North Queensland
Tablelands Regional Council was allocated $2262 to assist the Ravenshoe Youth Group to organise an event including karaoke, rap dance competitions, face painting, and a sausage sizzle cooked by young people.
Douglas United Football Club was allocated $3433 to deliver a football training camp, where young people can become members and players of the Douglas United Football Club prior to the commencement of the competitive season. Other activities such as rock wall climbing, musical entertainment and trampolining were also held.
Toowoomba and South West
Toowoomba City Care Inc was allocated $3000 to host Youth Fest enabling young people from the region to showcase their talents including Indigenous art, music, dance, graffiti, and skating. There was a strong emphasis on Indigenous culture with Indigenous artists, dancers and musicians performing.
Dalby Regional Council was allocated $3327 to stage a series of live music concerts in the region.
Gold Coast
Mudgeeraba State Special School and P&C Association was allocated $2280 to host a Youth Festival for students from five special schools, high school special education units, students from inclusion programs, and partner schools.
Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre was allocated $5000 to stage Youth Fest with entertainment provided by local high school bands, and dance and cultural presentations by local youth. The event also included competitions, information stalls, skate ramp, DJ, and carnival rides.
Sunshine Coast
South Pacific Youth Justice Inc was allocated $2368 to run activities that showcased young people's artistic talents and achievements, allowed them to gain skills by producing a talent show, acknowledged their diverse backgrounds, and expressed their ideas through their creativity.
Hinterland Christian Centre Ltd was allocated $2368 to run activities including a Youth Festival in Cooroy Skate Park, skate and scooter competitions, and an acoustic music competition.
Gympie Regional Council was allocated $2368 to stage the amazing race around town in the region. Activities included bike demonstrations, skate workshops, a pool party, and an under the stars movie night held at various locations throughout Gympie.
Wide Bay and Burnett
Fraser Coast Regional Council was allocated $2900 to stage events including workshops for young artists and writers with mentoring and skill development. A recognised artist worked with young people encouraging them to submit their work for exhibition during Youth Week.
Greater Brisbane
Redcliffe Area Youth Space was allocated $8000 to host three events each incorporating live music, art exhibitions, sporting activities, and amusement rides.
Inala Police Citizens Youth Club was allocated $3133 to host a dance party, including an MC, hip hop, krumping, and rap demonstrations, open mikes and dance competitions, and dance performances by Stylin' Up.
State wide
Queensland Youth Housing Coalition was allocated $5500 to provide homeless young people with an opportunity to voice issues of youth homelessness in Queensland through short films. A short film festival took place on Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2009.
Grants for National Youth Week 2010 will be advertised during 2009 so keep an eye out on this space for further information.
